Cougars Battle Back to Beat USciences in Women’s Hoops, 62-57

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half to earn a tough win on the road, 62-57 over USciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in Morgan Arena. The victory gives the Cougars an overall record of 10-7, including an 8-2 mark in league play. The Devils drop to 12-6, 7-4 CACC.

Caldwell used an 18-6 run, including three-pointers from junior guard Devin Gold (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) and sophomore guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic), to take a 24-20 lead with 7:21 left in the first half. But USciences closed out the half with a 12-3 spree to lead 32-27 at the break. The Devils out-rebounded the Cougars 30-18, with Brianne Traub tallying 14 points and 10 boards for the hosts.

USciences stayed hot into the second half, building its lead to 42-31 with 12:46 remaining. At that point Caldwell tightened up the defense, holding the Devils to 1-of-11 shooting from the field in a 16-4 spree that put the Cougars on top, 47-46 with 5:45 left to play. Angelo scored eight points, and freshman guard Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley) had six in the run. USciences briefly regained the lead, 49-48 with 3:37 on the clock, but Caldwell scored the next six points for a 54-49 advantage with 1:28 to go.

The Devils were able to cut the lead to one point three different times, with Jessica Sylvester hitting a pair of threes. After Camille McPherson made 1-of-2 from the line, junior guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) hit a pair of free throws to give Caldwell a 60-57 lead with 26 seconds left. A three-pointer by Traub to tie the game was off the mark, and Pilla put the game away with two free throws down the stretch.

The Cougars were balanced offensively, as seven players scored at least seven points. Angelo led the way with 11 points, Pilla had nine points and junior guard Morgan Thompson (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) added eight points. Senior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) and freshman forward Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's) each tallied seven points and 10 rebounds. Traub finished with 21 points and 13 boards to lead USciences.

Caldwell returns home to face Nyack College on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The CACC game starts at 6:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
