NYACK, N.Y. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team picked up a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on the road, beating Nyack College, 79-68 Thursday evening at Bowman Gymnasium. The Cougars are now 6-6 overall and 4-1 in league play, while the Warriors drop to 2-10, 1-4 CACC.
Caldwell started slowly and trailed for most of the first half. With the score tied at 23-23, Nyack tallied 11 points in a row, including three three-pointers from Tori Trador, to lead 34-23 with 3:15 on the clock. A pair of threes from freshman guard
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley) helped the Cougars cut the deficit to seven, 36-29 at the half. Trador drained six three-pointers in the first half for 18 points, while Pilla scored 10 points to lead Caldwell.
After Trador opened the second half with her seventh trey of the game, the Cougars reeled off an 8-0 run, including six points from freshman forward
Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's), to cut the deficit to two, 39-37. With the Warriors leading 47-43, four points by senior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) and a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) put the Cougars on top, 50-47 with 11:13 to play. Two more threes from Angelo helped Caldwell extend the lead to 61-53 with 7:45 remaining.
Nyack came within four points, 61-57 with 6:17 left, but Angelo's fourth three-pointer sparked a 14-6 run that gave the Cougars their largest lead, 75-63 with just over a minute to play. Caldwell completely dominated the boards in the second half, out-rebounding the Warriors 29-9 while shooting 50.0 percent from the field after halftime. The Cougars also held a huge advantage at the free throw line for the game, making 26-of-39 compared to 9-of-14 for Nyack.
Anderson notched her fifth straight double-double and seventh of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Caldwell. Pilla made four threes en route to 16 points, while Angelo hit all four of her three-point attempts to finish with 14 points. James snared 15 rebounds to go with seven points and two blocks, marking the third straight game she has had at least 15 boards. Trador made nine threes to account for all of her game-high 27 points for Nyack.
The Cougars face Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, Jan. 4 in another CACC road game. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
