CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College men's soccer team lost a non-conference match to visiting Queens College, 5-0 Monday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The defeat drops the Cougars to 4-4 on the season, while the Knights improve to 6-1-2.
Caldwell created several outstanding scoring chances early in the first half, with headers from junior defender
Steve Petrosino (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) and sophomore midfielder
Andrews Barros (Sao Paulo, Brazil/St. Teresinha) both hitting the crossbar in the third minute. Freshman forward
Haakon Sulheim (Lillehammer, Norway/Lillehammer) also had a header that went just wide and a shot that was saved by Sean Geoghegan seven minutes into the game.
But it was Queens that found the net first on a goal by Paul Sandoval in the 12th minute. Six minutes before halftime, Glen Reid scored off an assist from Aitor Gurretxaga for a 2-0 lead. Peter Touros scored twice in the second half, sandwiched around a goal by Jose Lopez in the 55th minute, as the Knights cruised to the non-league win.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) made eight saves in goal for Caldwell, while Geoghegan recorded five saves for the Knights, who held a narrow 17-15 edge in shots for the game.
The Cougars host Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up on Wednesday, Oct. 2, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
