Cougars Lose to St. Thomas Aquinas in Baseball

Box Score
POMONA, N.Y. – The Caldwell College baseball team lost a non-conference game to St. Thomas Aquinas College, 12-6 Wednesday afternoon at Provident Bank Park. The two teams also completed a suspended game that began on Mar. 14, with the Spartans winning 13-10. The Cougars are now 5-16 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 16-7.

St. Thomas Aquinas put seven runs on the board over the first three innings to take control of the game. In the top of the fourth, Caldwell got back into the game with four runs. Freshman Alex Rodriguez (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) drew a bases-loaded walk, junior Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) hit a two-run single and junior Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) singled home Rodriguez to make the score 7-4. After the Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars scored twice in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the slow start.

Senior Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) and junior Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) had two hits apiece to lead the offense. Junior pitcher Lucas Willenbrock (Amityville, NY/Amityville Memorial) started and took the loss for Caldwell.

In the game that began on Mar. 14 in Florida, the Spartans led 10-9 after seven innings. In the top of the eighth, senior Peter Scianna (Chicago, IL/St. Mary's) delivered a double that plated Rodriguez to tie the score at 10-10. But the Spartans scored three times in the bottom of the eighth and retired the Cougars in the ninth to close out the win.

Caldwell hosts Pace University on Thursday, Apr. 4 for a non-league game. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell, N.J.
