NEW CASTLE, Del. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost twice to ninth-ranked Wilmington University, 12-1 and 11-4 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Cougars drop to 8-29 overall and 6-13 in the conference, while the Wildcats improve to 35-12, 16-3 CACC.
The first game started well for Caldwell, as junior
Anthony Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) led off the first inning with a single, moved to third on a wild pitch and a single by junior
Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville), and scored on a grounder by senior
Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross). But Wilmington tied the game with a run in the second, took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fourth and put seven runs on the board in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Joe Marciano had two doubles and four runs batted in for the Wildcats, while Nunez had two of Caldwell's five hits in the loss.
The Cougars shook off the first game and put three runs on the board in the top of the first inning of Game 2. O'Donnell hit a solo home run and junior
Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) delivered a two-run single for a 3-0 lead. Wilmington scored a run in the bottom of the first, then took a 4-3 lead with three runs in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, Morena plated Nunez with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4-4. But again the Wildcats recorded a big inning, scoring seven times in the bottom of the seventh for an 11-4 bulge.
Freshman
Alex Rodriguez (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) went 2-for-4 with a double in the second game. Josh Hampton and Joe El-Bisi had three RBIs apiece for Wilmington.
Caldwell plays a CACC game at Concordia College on Monday, Apr. 29, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
