Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team outlasted Goldey-Beacom College, 70-69 in a double-overtime thriller Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, held at the University of the Sciences' Morgan Arena. The Cougars improve to 19-11 overall with their 15th straight win and advance to Saturday's championship game.
Goldey-Beacom used a 20-8 run in the first half to break open a close game and take a 34-19 lead with two minutes left. Caldwell scored the next eight points, including four from sophomore guard
Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic), to pull within seven, 34-27. Ashley Rosario tallied the final basket of the half to give the Lightning a 36-27 halftime lead. Goldey-Beacom shot 51.7 percent from the floor compared to 27.3 percent for Caldwell in the first half.
The Cougars chipped away at the Lightning lead, tying the score twice before taking their first lead of the game, 57-55 on a lay-up by Coscia with 2:12 left. Coscia's basket capped a 9-2 run that included five points from senior guard
Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.). The lead was still two points following a Jones free throw with 18 seconds left when Devonne Richardson scored to tie the game at 58-58. A jumper by Jones as time ran down was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.
Free throws by senior center
Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and a conventional three-point play by junior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) allowed Caldwell to take a 63-58 advantage early in the overtime period. But the Lightning tied the score over the next 2:20, and had an opportunity to win the game with the final possession. Richardson's attempt did not go down, and the game went to a second overtime.
Jones opened the extra session with a three, then hit two free throws for a 68-63 lead with 2:09 remaining. Consecutive baskets by Irene Hudson, Jacinda Jones and Richardson put the Lightning ahead, 69-68 with 20 seconds on the clock. On their next possession, the Cougars worked the ball in to Anderson, who was fouled with 7.6 seconds left. Anderson drained both free throws to put Caldwell on top, 70-69. Richardson dribbled to the left of the basket but was trapped by the Cougar defense and unable to get off a shot as time expired.
Caldwell never got on track offensively, shooting a season-low 28.8 percent from the field. But the Cougars made 30 trips to the free throw line and converted 23 times, compared to 8-of-16 for Goldey-Beacom.
Torey Jones led all players with 28 points, while Anderson finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Coscia contributed a career-high 12 points to go with four assists and three steals, and Felix had 11 points, 12 boards, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Richardson and Jacinda Jones each had 15 points for the Lightning (20-10), with Richardson adding 13 rebounds, nine assists and three steals.
Caldwell, the top seed in the North, advances to the finals for the sixth time in the program's history and the first since 2003, when the Cougars won the CACC championship. They will face defending conference champion Holy Family in the final on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 4:00 p.m.
