CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team defeated Queens College, 9-4 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The Cougars are now 2-14 on the season, while the Knights fall to 3-12.
Caldwell opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning on a single by sophomore
Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) that plated junior
Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph). Then in the fourth, Humes hit a bases-loaded single up the middle that brought home Nyitray and freshman
Alex Rodriguez (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) for a 3-0 lead.
After Queens scored a run in the top of the fifth, the Cougars scored four times in the bottom of the fifth, all with two outs. Junior
Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) singled home senior
Tom Todaro (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic), and Nyitray launched a three-run home run to left, his first of the season. Junior
Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) hit a two-run single in the eighth.
Junior right-hander
Lucas Willenbrock (Amityville, NY/Amityville Memorial) picked up the victory, allowing one run on five hits while striking out two and walking two in 6 2/3 innings. Nyitray, Humes and Nunez each delivered a pair of hits for the Cougars. Anthony Mazzella had three hits for the Knights.
Caldwell plays a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Bloomfield College on Thursday, Mar. 28. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m. at West Side Park in Newark, N.J.
