CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team defeated Philadelphia University, 72-50 in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The win is the 14th in a row for the Cougars, who improve to 18-11 on the season and advance to the semifinals on Mar. 8 at the University of the Sciences. The Rams complete their season at 14-13.
Caldwell held Philadelphia to 23.7 percent shooting in the first half in building a 33-18 halftime advantage. Junior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) led the way with three blocks to go with seven points and seven rebounds. In the second half, the Cougars pulled away with a 13-2 run that increased the lead to 52-27 with 11:16 remaining. Junior guard
Marielle Duryea (Middle Village, NY/Archbishop Molloy) scored seven points in the run, including a conventional three-point play. The Rams cut the deficit to 16 points at the six-minute mark before Caldwell pushed the lead up to a game-high 28 points, 70-42 on a three-pointer by senior guard
Chelsea Loscalzo (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) with 2:39 to play.
The Cougars posted a 51-46 edge in rebounding while dishing out 21 assists, led by sophomore guard
Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) with seven. The victory is the second over Philadelphia in the CACC Tournament quarterfinals, following last year's 62-42 win in the Newman Center.
Duryea led the Cougars offensively with 13 points. Anderson finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks and three steals for her 13th double-double of the season. Senior center
Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) contributed 10 points and 10 boards, and senior guard
Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) added nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Jones, Felix and Loscalzo played their final game in the Newman Center. Blye led the Rams with 18 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in the final game of her career.
Caldwell, the top seed from the CACC North Division, advances to the semifinals to face Goldey-Beacom College, the second seed in the South, on Friday, Mar. 8. The game starts at 12:00 p.m. at USciences' Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia, Pa.
