Cougar Baseball Drops Close Game to AIC, 5-4

Box Score
LANTANA, Fla. – The Caldwell College baseball team was edged by American International College, 5-4 in a non-conference game at the Palm Beach Challenge, held at the Santaluces Sports Complex. The Cougars fall to 1-5 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 4-2.

Trailing 5-1, Caldwell mounted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with no outs. Junior Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) hit a sacrifice fly, junior Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) singled home sophomore Dominick Mangarella (N. Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) and senior Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 5-4. But the Cougars couldn't get the tying run home in the eighth. Then in the ninth, Caldwell put runners on first and third with one out but again were unable to get the key hit.

Sophomore Nick Karalekas (Huntington station, NY/Walt Whitman) turned in a solid start, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Juniors Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) and Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cordozo) had two hits apiece.

The Cougars continue play at the Palm Beach Challenge on Wednesday, Mar. 13, with games against Molloy College and LIU Post at 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
