Caldwell Women’s Hoops Clinches Playoff Berth With Ninth Straight Win

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team survived a three-point barrage in the second half to beat Concordia College, 82-76 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Tuesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars improve to 13-11 overall and 11-4 in the conference to secure a spot in the CACC Tournament and move to within a half-game of Dominican College atop the North Division. The Clippers drop to 7-16, 6-9 CACC.

Caldwell used a 13-4 run to break open a close game and grab a 23-13 lead midway through the first half. The lead grew to as many as 15 before ending the half with a 36-23 edge. The Cougars shot just 29.7 percent from the field in the first half but dominated the glass, 31-13 to score 17 second chance points. Senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) registered 12 points and nine rebounds to lead all players.

Momentum stayed with the host Cougars into the second half, as junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) scored six points to spark an 18-9 run for the largest lead of the game, 54-32 with 14:16 remaining. Concordia answered by launching three-pointers in an attempt to get back in the game, and it worked. A three from Tara-Ann Rock at the 14-minute mark was the first of eight Clipper three-pointers that ignited an amazing 30-8 run and tied the score at 62-62 with just under eight minutes to play. Victoria Jones hit three threes, while Rock and Mariah Berry made two apiece in the run.

After two free throws by Anderson gave Caldwell a slight 68-66 advantage with 3:38 to play, Sade Jones drilled another three to put the Clippers on top, 69-68. Sophomore forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) answered with a jumper, then Torey Jones hit from long range to make the score 73-69 Caldwell with three minutes left. Anderson hit all six of her free throws the rest of the way to ice the game for the Cougars, who tied the school record of nine wins in a row, set during the 1996-97 season and matched by the 2010-11 squad.

Anderson finished with 30 points while making 12-of-14 from the charity stripe, and grabbed 15 rebounds. Torey Jones snared a career-high 12 boards to go with 22 points, and senior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) tallied 13 points and nine rebounds. The Cougars ended up with a 53-24 rebounding advantage and made 28-of-34 from the line compared to 8-of-12 for Concordia. Krystina Agard had 21 points and six assists, and Sade Jones notched 17 points and nine assists for the Clippers, who hit 10-of-16 from three-point range in the second half and shot 54.7 percent from the field for the game.

Caldwell also honored its seniors Felix, Jones and guard Chelsea Loscalzo (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) before the game.

The Cougars host Chestnut Hill College on Thursday, Feb. 14 in a game originally scheduled for this past Saturday. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
