MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team earned a hard-fought non-conference victory over Southern New Hampshire University, 76-71 Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. Senior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) led the way with a career-high 34 points for the Cougars, who are now 5-6 on the season. The Penmen drop to 5-6.
Caldwell led for most of the first half and held a 23-14 advantage with 7:25 left in the period. Southern New Hampshire responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points to pull to within three, 25-22. A three-pointer by junior guard
Devin Gold (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) sparked a 15-3 run that gave the Cougars a commanding 40-25 lead with a minute left before halftime. A pair of Penmen baskets in the final minute made the score 40-29 Caldwell at the break. The Cougars shot 55.2 percent from the field compared to 29.4 percent for SNHU, while Anderson and junior forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) scored 13 points apiece in the first half.
The Penmen got back into the game by opening the second half with a 14-6 run to make it a three-point game, 46-43. After four points from Anderson and a basket by freshman forward
Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's) pushed the lead up to 52-45, SNHU reeled off an 18-5 spree that gave the hosts a 63-57 advantage with eight minutes to play. But Caldwell was able to recover, getting four points from Anderson and a three-pointer by junior guard
Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) in a 9-0 run that put the Cougars on top, 72-67 with 2:09 remaining. The Penmen came within three points twice, but Caldwell hit 4-of-6 from the line down the stretch to close out the win.
The Cougars shot just 30.8 percent from the floor in the second half but made 72.0 percent (18-of-25) from the charity stripe after halftime. The victory is the first over a team from the Northeast 10 Conference in five tries this season for Caldwell.
Anderson scored 21 of her career-high 34 points in the second half, shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 14-of-19 from the line in the game. She also grabbed 13 rebounds and delivered four assists, giving her six double-doubles on the season. Caswell finished with 15 points, while Coscia dished out eight assists. James corralled a game-high 15 rebounds and added nine points, two steals and a block. Amra Elezovic led SNHU with 19 points. Â
Caldwell resumes its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Jan. 2 with a game at Nyack College.
