Cougars Cruise Past Dominican in Women’s Hoops, 61-42

Box Score
CALDWELL, N.J. - Senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) recorded 20 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead the Caldwell College women's basketball team past Dominican College, 61-42 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Tuesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The win is the sixth in a row for the Cougars, who are now 10-11 overall and 8-4 in the conference. The Lady Chargers drop to 12-7, 9-3 CACC.

Caldwell jumped out to a huge lead, scoring the first 15 points in a 17-2 run to open the game. Sophomore forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) and junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) each scored six points in the run. Dominican fought back and cut the deficit to 10, 31-21 with 4:29 left in the half. But the Cougars regained control by closing out the half with a 12-2 run for a 43-23 halftime advantage. Jones made seven of her nine field goal attempts en route to 16 first-half points, as the Cougars shot 62.1 percent from the field compared to 32.0 percent for the Lady Chargers.

Caldwell still led by 21, 51-30 five minutes into the second half when Dominican made a push to get back in the game. A 12-4 run, capped by a three from Lindsey Lopez, made the score 55-42 Caldwell with 7:51 remaining. But the Cougars scored the game's final six points, holding the Lady Chargers scoreless from that point on. Caldwell held Dominican to 19.2 percent shooting in the second half while making 50.0 percent of its own shots from the field for the game.

Jones's performance marked her eighth game with 20 points or more this season and the second in three games. Anderson finished with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, while sophomore guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) dished out five assists. Bianca Harris led the Lady Chargers with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The win avenges a 73-57 loss at Dominican on Nov. 28 and moves the Cougars to within one game behind the Lady Chargers for the CACC North Division lead.

The Cougars host the University of the Sciences in another CACC contest on Saturday, Feb. 2, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
