Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 71-61 victory over visiting Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The win is the third in a row for the Cougars, who are now 7-11 overall and 5-4 in league play. The Eagles fall to 8-8, 7-3 CACC with the loss.
Early in the first half, a pair of threes from freshman guard
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) sparked a 10-0 run that put Caldwell ahead 20-9 six minutes into the game. Post battled back to pull to within two points before the Cougars took a 33-30 lead at the half. Angelo had three three-pointers and nine points in the first half.
The Eagles opened the second half with an 11-5 run for a 41-38 lead with under 16 minutes to play. The lead changed hands three times, with another three from Angelo starting an 11-3 spree that gave Caldwell a 54-47 advantage with 8:30 remaining. Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) bury a three-pointer for a 57-51 lead at the 6:48 mark. Post never came closer than four points the rest of the way, as junior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) registered a conventional three-point play, and the Cougars hit 5-of-6 from the line down the stretch.
Caldwell committed just five turnovers after halftime and shot 40.0 percent from the field for the game compared to 38.5 percent for Post. The Cougars are 6-2 when shooting 40 percent or better this season.
Angelo ended up making 4-of-6 from three-point range en route to a career-high 18 points. Senior center
Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) had 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks, Jones scored 13 points and Anderson finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Also contributing was junior guard
Marielle Duryea (Middle Village, NY/Archbishop Molloy), who had career highs of eight assists and four steals. Aubrey Latham led Post with 23 points, while Fernanda Mansilla recorded five points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, Jan 23 with a CACC home game against Nyack College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
