Cougar Baseball Ends Regular Season with Loss to Nyack

POMONA, N.Y. – The Caldwell College baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 loss to Nyack College in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Provident Bank Park. The Cougars are now 12-28 on the season, while the Warriors improve to 23-22.

After Nyack scored in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead, Caldwell tied it in the top of the third on a single by sophomore Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) that plated sophomore Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea). The game remained knotted at 1-1 until JD Calabrese hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-1 Nyack lead.

The Cougars' offensive woes continued, as Caldwell managed to score one run on five hits off Nyack starter Craig Jacobs. Over the last four games, all losses, the Cougars have scored a total of two runs.

Freshman right-hander Eric Bomenblit (Allenwood, NJ/Wall) started and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits in an effective 5 1/3 innings. Freshman Gary Gurino-Burns (N. Massapequa, NY/Plainedge) pitched one perfect inning of relief. O'Donnell had two of the Cougars' five hits in the loss.

Caldwell currently sits in seventh place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings, a half-game behind Concordia College for the sixth and final spot in the CACC Tournament. A Concordia loss to Felician College on Wednesday would give the Cougars sixth place due to the regular-season sweep of the Clippers on Mar. 20.
