St. Thomas Aquinas Beats Caldwell in Baseball, 7-1

POMONA, N.Y. – The Caldwell College baseball team lost to St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-1 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at Provident Bank Park. The loss drops the Cougars to 9-22 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 24-12.

Caldwell broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth without getting a hit. Senior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Ynoa for the game's first run. A two-run homer by Mike Russo in the bottom of the sixth gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead, then a five-run seventh put the hosts on top, 7-1. Caldwell did not record a hit in the game until there was one out in the top of the ninth, when Nunez singled to left.

Nick May pitched six innings without allowing a hit, while Eric Cooper tossed two hitless innings of relief for St. Thomas Aquinas. Sophomore Chris DeRogatis (N. Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) started for Caldwell and gave up six runs on nine hits in six innings of work.

The Cougars host C.W. Post in a non-league game on Tuesday, Apr. 17, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval.
