Caldwell Baseball Falters at Dominican

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Caldwell College baseball team dropped a non-conference game at Dominican College, 19-3 Friday afternoon at Veteran's Park. The Cougars are now 9-19 on the season, while the Chargers improve to 13-20.

Dominican scored a whopping 18 runs in a four-inning span that started with a six-run second inning. Four Caldwell errors led to eight unearned runs for the Chargers, who received five runs batted in from Tony Blake. Pitcher Jordan Paszek tossed seven scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and striking out 11.

The Cougars didn't get on the scoreboard until the top of the eighth, when a bases-loaded walk by freshman James Philips (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) and an error allowed juniors Peter Scianna (Chicago, IL/St. Mary's) and Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) to come home. Then in the ninth, sophomore Steve Valenti (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) singled home sophomore Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) for Caldwell's third run. Valenti paced the offense with three of the Cougars' seven hits.

The game served as a precursor for Saturday's doubleheader between the Cougars and Chargers that counts in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell, N.J.
