DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Caldwell College baseball team posted its highest run total of the season in an 11-4 non-conference victory over Mercy College Tuesday afternoon at Mavericks Field. The win gives the Cougars an overall record of 8-16, while the Mavericks drop to 6-22.
Caldwell got off to a slow start, surrendering three runs in the bottom of the first inning to trail 3-0. In the top of the second, the Cougars got two runs back, scoring on a wild pitch and a grounder by sophomore Stephen Dodd (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) that plated senior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan). Then in the third, Caldwell loaded the bases with one out. Doerrer singled in senior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside), then sophomore Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) hit a two-run single to put the Cougars on top, 5-3. Luczaj eventually came home on a wild pitch for a 6-3 advantage.
Caldwell continued to put runners on base, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 8-3. After Mercy added a run in the bottom of the fifth, junior Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) hit a two-run double and scored on a double by Doerrer in the sixth for an 11-4 lead.
Doerrer finished the day with four hits, three runs and two runs batted in to lead the offensive attack. Luczaj had a pair of hits, while Ynoa scored three times. Sophomore Chris DeRogatis (N. Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) overcame a shaky start and pitched eight innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits while striking out five and walking two. Freshman Eric Bomenblit (Allenwood, NJ/Wall) pitched a perfect inning of relief.
The Cougars are scheduled to host Nyack College on Wednesday, Apr. 11 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. The first game starts at 3:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell, N.J.
