PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College baseball team erased a two-run deficit to beat the University of the Sciences, 4-3 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Monday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field. The win gives the Cougars a 3-11 record overall, including a 3-0 mark in the conference. The Devils fall to 5-10, 1-4 CACC.
Trailing 2-0 after USciences scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, Caldwell got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Stephen Dodd (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) led off the inning with a triple and later scored on a grounder by senior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside). Then in the fifth, sophomore Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph's) hit a two-run double, and came home on a Ynoa single for a 4-2 lead. The Devils scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, but only managed a walk over the final two innings.
Sophomore pitcher Robert Bennetti (Laurence Harbor, NJ/Old Bridge) pitched the final 4 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit and an unearned run while striking out two and walking four for his first victory of the season. Senior Craig Gourley (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) started and struck out seven while giving up a pair of runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Freshman Dominick Mangarella (East Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) went 2-for-2 with a run in his first action of the season. The Cougars recorded five hits and four runs off Devils' ace Dan McMahon, who fanned five and walked five in 6 1/3 innings.
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the fourth inning due to time constraints.
The Cougars play a non-conference game with Bloomfield College on Tuesday, Mar. 27, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Westside Park in Newark, N.J.
