Adelphi Edges Caldwell in Baseball, 4-2

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team lost a non-conference game to visiting Adelphi University, 4-2 Wednesday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 2-10 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 7-5.

Adelphi broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth with three runs on four hits. Caldwell responded in the bottom of the sixth, as freshman Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's) plated senior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) hit a run-scoring single to make the score 3-2 Panthers. After Adelphi scored a run in the eighth for a 4-2 advantage, the Cougars loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth on a walk and two singles. But Adelphi pitcher James McCormack induced a grounder to third that turned into a double play to end the threat.

Freshman right-hander Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) turned in a quality start, allowing four runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings. Ynoa and Nunez each had a pair of hits to pace the Cougars offensively. Steven Bove lasted 5 2/3 innings and earned the win for Adelphi, while Matt Abramowitz pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

Caldwell plays another non-league opponent on Thursday, Mar. 22, when St. Thomas Aquinas College visits the Kiwanis Oval. The game starts at 3:30 p.m.
