LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team topped Georgian Court University on the road, 70-63 in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory gives the Cougars a 16-10 record on the season, including a 13-6 mark in league play. The Lions drop to 6-20, 5-14 CACC.
Caldwell took control of the game right from the opening tip, scoring 14 of the first 16 points en route to a 31-11 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. The Cougars hit 5-of-8 from three-point range in the first half, including a trey from senior guard Willeen Capehart (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) with 38 seconds left for a 42-21 advantage at the break.
Momentum stayed with Caldwell into the second half, as the lead grew to as many as 26, 53-27 with 13:39 remaining. The Lions out-scored the Cougars 29-10 over the next 11 minutes to close the gap to 63-56 with 2:48 on the clock. But that's as close as they would get, as Caldwell made 5-of-7 from the line the rest of the way to close out the win. The Cougars ended up shooting 50.9 percent from the floor for the game while limiting Georgian Court to 32.4 percent.
Junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) made 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and finished with a game-high 21 points to go with five assists, two blocks and two steals. Capehart drained a pair of threes and had 20 points, while freshman guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) dished out 10 assists. Senior forward Kaitlyn Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and scored eight points in the win. Brittany Baker paced GCU with 14 points and 10 boards.
The victory, coupled with Dominican's loss at Holy Family, gives the Cougars second place in the CACC North Division and clinches a home game in the first round of the conference tournament. Caldwell will host either Goldey-Beacom or Philadelphia on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
