Caldwell Women’s Hoops Falls to Bloomfield in Overtime

Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team dropped a close game to Bloomfield College, 64-55 in overtime, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The result gives the Cougars an overall record of 4-11, including a 2-4 mark in league play, while the Lady Deacons improve to 7-3, 4-1 CACC.

After a basket by Ariel Wilson put Bloomfield ahead, 53-51 with 1:45 left in the second half, a pair of free throws from senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) tied the score at 53-53 with 1:24 on the clock. Both teams came up empty in their final possessions, sending the game to overtime. In the extra period, Jones scored off the opening tip for a 55-53 Caldwell lead. But the Lady Deacons held the Cougars scoreless after that, using an 11-0 run to earn the victory. Caldwell shot just 1-of-9 from the field in the extra session, while Bloomfield made 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

Junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) helped the Cougars take a 24-21 halftime lead, scoring 13 points. Neither team shot the ball well in the game's first 20 minutes, as Caldwell made 32.0 percent of its field goal attempts compared to 27.6 percent for Bloomfield.

The Lady Deacons scored the first six points of the second half to lead 27-24. The game went back and forth over the next 11 minutes with 15 lead changes. Baskets by junior guard Marielle Duryea (Middle Village, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and Anderson gave Caldwell a 51-48 lead with 4:20 left, only to have Ivettlis Castro hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 51-51 with three minutes remaining. The game remained tied at the end of regulation, with Bloomfield taking control in the extra session for the win.

Bloomfield scored 22 points off 27 Caldwell turnovers, while the Cougars made just 1-of-17 from three-point range. Anderson finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Jones had 18 points and six boards. Sophomore forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) tallied 10 points and seven rebounds, and Duryea registered a career-best seven assists. Castro hit four threes and led Bloomfield with 18 points.

The Cougars' next game is on Saturday, Jan. 5 against defending CACC champion Holy Family University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
