CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone as the Caldwell College women's basketball team defeated Queens College, 69-63 in a non-conference game Wednesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The victory gives the Cougars a 3-10 record on the year, while the Knights fall to 3-4.
Anderson, who entered the game needing two points for 1,000, grabbed an offensive rebound and scored less than two minutes into the game. She is the 15th Caldwell women's basketball player to reach 1,000 career points in the history of the program.
Anderson's basket helped Caldwell jump out to an early 13-0 lead. Queens cut the deficit to three points twice, including 35-32 with under a minute to go in the half, before a free throw from sophomore guard
Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) gave the Cougars a 36-32 lead at the break. Caldwell made 5-of-12 from three-point range and shot 43.3 percent from the field in the first half.
The Cougars pushed the lead to 39-32 in the first minute of the second half, but two three-pointers by Bria Jackson and one from Marie Byrnes sparked the Knights to a 49-48 advantage with 11:52 remaining. A jumper and a three from senior guard
Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) put Caldwell back on top, and another three from Coscia later in the half gave the Cougars a 60-55 edge with 5:16 to play.
Jackson struck again for Queens, hitting two free throws and a three to tie the score at 60-60 with four minutes left. After a basket by Anderson, Byrnes drained another three to put the Knights back on top, 63-62 with 3:14 on the clock. The Cougar defense tightened up the rest of the way, forcing a turnover and three missed shots down the stretch. Baskets by Anderson and junior guard
Marielle Duryea (Middle Village, NY/Archbishop Molloy), plus three free throws from Jones, proved to be the difference, as the Cougars closed out the win.
Jones led all players with 30 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Her five three-pointers on the night give her 200 treys for her career, leaving her two shy of the school record of 202, set by
Kirsty Leedham from 2007-11. Anderson finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Freshman guard
Fahime Farzanessa (Cologne, Germany/Humboldt) added eight points and four steals, while Coscia registered seven assists. Jackson made five three-pointers for Queens and had 25 points, while Byrnes scored 20 points in the loss.
The Cougars return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a home game against Felician College on Saturday, Dec. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
