Virginia Union Beats Cougars in Women's Basketball

Box Score EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost to Virginia Union University, 66-62 at the East Stroudsburg Tournament Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Cougars fall to 1-7 with the loss, while the Lady Panthers improve to 2-3.

Trailing 25-23 with four minutes left in the first half, Caldwell closed out the half with a 12-3 run to take a 35-28 lead at the break. Senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) made three three-pointers in the final six minutes of the half en route to 12 points for the Cougars. Caldwell hit 6-of-10 from three-point range while holding VUU to 29.5 percent shooting in the first period.

Jones and the Cougars continued to have the hot hand, as Jones and freshman guard Fahime Farzanessa (Cologne, Germany/Humboldt) each had two threes and sophomore guard Devin Gold (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) buried another to give Caldwell a 59-49 lead with 10:49 remaining in the game. The Lady Panthers battled back, and used back-to-back three-pointers from Ashle Freeman take a 62-60 lead with 3:18 left. After a basket by Danielle Ferguson made it 64-60, sophomore guard Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) hit a lay-up with 54 seconds to play to make it a two-point game. But Ferguson put the game away with two free throws down the stretch.

The Lady Panthers out-scored Caldwell 17-3 over the final 10:49 of the game, limiting the Cougars to 1-of-9 shooting from the field. For the game Caldwell made 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from beyond the arc, but committed 29 turnovers that Virginia Union turned into 23 points.

Jones matched her career high with six threes in eight attempts and finished with 20 points, five rebounds and two steals. Junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and was named to the all-tournament team. Farzenessa finished with nine points and six boards. Ferguson and Freeman each had 16 points for Virginia Union, while Parress Davis registered 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Caldwell begins its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Dominican College. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
