Stonehill Clips Cougars Down the Stretch in Women's Hoops

Box Score EASTON, Mass. – For the second game in a row, the Caldwell College women's basketball team came up just short at the Stonehill Tournament, losing to the host Skyhawks, 43-42 Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium. The Cougars, who fell in overtime to Assumption College on Friday, are now 1-4 overall, while Stonehill improves to 3-0.

With Caldwell hanging on to a 42-38 lead, Stonehill's Amy Pelletier made it a two-point game with a basket at the 2:19 mark. After a pair of Skyhawk steals, Abbey Lalime was fouled and made 1-of-2 from the line for a 42-41 Caldwell lead with 1:06 left. Both teams failed to score on their next possessions, and senior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) grabbed the rebound off the Stonehill miss and was fouled with nine seconds left. Not yet in the bonus, the Cougars had possession but turned the ball over. Asia Ewing made a lay-up with six second left for the go-ahead basket, 43-42. Ewing then stole the ball with five seconds left to seal the win.

Caldwell started well, building an 11-point lead following back-to-back threes from senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) and freshman guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) made it 21-10 with four minutes left in the half. Stonehill closed out the half with a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to three, 25-22 at the break. Midway through the second half, the Cougars maintained control and led 38-29. But the Skyhawks scored the next seven points to make it a two-point game, 38-36 and set the stage for Ewing's late heroics.

The Cougars shot 44.0 percent from the field in the first half but made just 6-of-29 in the second half. The Skyhawks shot a meager 24.2 percent from the floor for the game but scored 18 points off 22 Caldwell turnovers.

Junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and was named to the all-tournament team. Felix had eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks, while Jones finished with eight points, a career-best 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Mary Louise Dixon led Stonehill with 11 points and was named the tournament's MVP.

Caldwell plays its first home game of the season on Monday, Nov. 19, when the Cougars host the University of Bridgeport. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
