PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - A goal in the ninth minute of the second overtime period allowed Holy Family University to defeat the Caldwell College men's soccer team, 3-2 in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game of the season Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field. The loss is the first of the year for the Cougars (2-1), while the Tigers improve to 2-1.
Caldwell opened the scoring with a goal by sophomore forward Mosiah Whyte (Coram, NY/Newfield) off an assist from junior Brendan Hughes (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) in the 17th minute. The goal was Whyte's team-leading fifth of the season. Holy Family pulled even in the 52nd minute with a goal by Keith Crews, but the Cougars regained the lead in the 59th minute. Junior midfielder Donald Kafer (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown), pictured, finished a pass from junior George Mikula (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) for his first of the season. Again, the Tigers came back to tie the game with a goal by Nicolas Delgado in the 74th minute.
The game remained knotted through the rest of regulation and after the first 10-minute overtime period. With the game less than two minutes from being declared a tie, Seydou Ba tallied an unassisted goal to give Holy Family the victory. It was the fifth goal of the season for Ba, who was named the co-CACC Player of the Week along with Whyte earlier this week.
Junior goalkeeper Brian Agostini (N. Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) registered five saves in goal for Caldwell, while Mark Ferretti made nine saves for Holy Family. The two teams each took 21 shots and had eight corner kicks apiece.
Caldwell hosts Molloy College in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 13, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
