SPARTANS TOP COUGARS IN BASEBALL

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team fell to St. Thomas Aquinas College, 10-4 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 10-13 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 13-9-1.

After surrendering three runs in the top of the first, the Cougars got one run back in the bottom of the first. Freshman Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) led off with a double and later scored on a double by junior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) to make the score 3-1 St. Thomas Aquinas. The Spartans made it 6-1 with two runs in the third and another in the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, senior Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) doubled, move to third on a single by sophomore Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) and came home on a grounder from junior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan). With the score 9-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Mejia doubled home Ynoa and scored on Lopez's double. Mejia, pictured, went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs and an RBI, while Lopez also had three hits.

St. Thomas Aquinas tallied 16 hits on the day, including four from Fred Moore. Moore and George Wargo both homered for the Spartans. Pitcher Sean Marsiglia started and gave up two runs on four hits in five innings to earn the victory, while Caldwell freshman Al Etter (Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) lasted four innings and took the loss.

Caldwell plays a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Monday, Apr. 4 at Concordia College. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
