NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Caldwell College baseball team dropped its fifth game in a row, losing 6-0 to 13th-ranked Southern Connecticut State University in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at the Ballpark at SCSU. The Cougars are now 16-23 on the season, while the Owls improve to 31-4-1.
Caldwell struggled to solve Owls starter Steve Simon, managing just two hits while not scoring a run for only the sixth time this season. Freshman Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) singled in the third inning and junior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) singled in the fourth. Southern Connecticut scored twice in the first inning, then received a two-run home run from Ryan Geffert in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. Two more runs in the seventh made the score 6-0.
Freshman Chris DeRogatis (N. Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) started and allowed four runs on three hits to absorb the loss. Freshman Gary Gurino-Burns (N. Massapequa, NY/Plainedge), pictured, pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings while striking our four in a solid relief appearance. Simon went the distance, giving up two hits while striking out 12 and walking one in the shutout victory.
The Cougars play a non-conference game at Dominican College on Thursday, May 5 in the regular-season finale.
