PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost a non-conference game to Pace University, 9-3 Thursday afternoon at Finnerty Field. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 16-19 overall, while the Setters improve to 13-20.
After surrendering four runs in the bottom of the first inning, Caldwell got on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Freshman Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) singled home sophomore Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario), and freshman Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 4-2 Pace. But the Setters scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Joe Lombardi and James Pjura both homered for Pace. Caldwell scored a run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from junior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan).
Freshman Gary Gurino-Burns (N. Massapequa, NY/Plainedge) made his first collegiate start and took the loss, while Michael Franza worked seven innings to earn the victory for the Setters. Freshman Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo), pictured, led the Cougar bats with three hits.
Caldwell wraps up the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular season with a doubleheader at Dominican College on Monday, Apr. 25. The first game is set to start at 10:00 a.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
