PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team was eliminated by No. 15 Holy Family University, 82-63 in the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at Holy Family's Campus Center. The result leaves the Cougars with an overall record of 21-6, while the Tigers (23-3) advance to Saturday's championship game.
The Tigers got off to a quick start, scoring the first 10 points of the game. Sophomore guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) helped the Cougars get back in the game by scoring 14 of Caldwell's 17 points to pull her team to within two, 19-17 with 12:37 on the clock. Holy Family regained control with a 13-4 run, capped by a three-pointer from Megan Gibson, with 6:12 left in the half. The lead grew to as many as 14 points, as the host Tigers took a 47-33 advantage in the halftime break. Jones tallied 22 points in the first half, as the Cougars shot 39.4 percent from the field compared to 53.3 percent for Holy Family.
Following a basket by junior forward Kaitlyn Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) to open the second half, Holy Family's Samantha Thompson notched eight consecutive points, including a pair of threes, to put the Tigers on top, 55-35. The Cougars were able to come as close as 17 points the rest of the way, as Holy Family led by as many as 28 points to close out the win. Caldwell continued to struggle from the field, making 28.1 percent from the floor in the second half.
Jones, pictured, finished with a game-high 26 points while making four three-pointers for the game. Senior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) had 16 points, freshman forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) tallied nine points and nine rebounds, and senior guard Abena George (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) notched six assists and three steals. Thompson paced Holy Family with 21 points while going 5-of-8 from three-point range.
Caldwell, which tied a school record for wins in a season, will learn if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament when the NCAA announces the entire field on Sunday, Mar. 6 at 9:30 p.m. at www.ncaa.com.
