NEWARK, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team had runners on base all day but could not get the key hit in a pair of losses to Bloomfield College Tuesday afternoon at West Side Park. The Cougars, who are now 8-11 overall and 3-3 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, stranded a total of 20 runners on base on the day. The Deacons improve to 8-16, 4-2 CACC with the sweep.
The first game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when the Deacons recorded three consecutive singles to load the bases. Rafael Medina drew a walk to force in the game's first run, then Luis Buron singled to make it 2-0. In the top of the seventh, junior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) singled home freshman Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) to make it a one-run game. Ynoa later stole second to move into scoring position with one out, but the next two batters failed to bring him home. In the ninth, junior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) hit a one-out single and stole second. But again the runner was stranded in scoring position, as Steve Godowski retired the final two batters to earn the save.
Sophomore Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) had two hits in Game 1, as junior Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) pitched all eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits while fanning seven and walking two. Luis Mendoza earned the win for Bloomfield after giving up an unearned run on five hits in six innings.
In the second game, Bloomfield took an early lead with two unearned runs in the bottom of the second. Caldwell got one run back in the top of the third, when senior Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) doubled, advanced to third and later scored on a wild pitch. The Cougars advanced runners to second in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings but did not score, as the Deacons plated runs in the seventh and eighth innings for a 4-1 lead. Jason Luzzi hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman right-hander Chris DeRogatis (N. Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) turned in a solid performance, giving up two unearned runs on two hits in six innings of work for Caldwell. Mejia and Nyitray, pictured, paced the Cougar bats with two hits apiece. Eric Kamp earned the win for Bloomfield after allowing one run on eight hits in seven innings.
Caldwell plays a non-conference game at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Thursday, Mar. 31, beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Sparkill, N.Y.
