NEW HAVEN DOWNS COUGAR BASEBALL IN FLORIDA

LANTANA, Fla. – The Caldwell College baseball team dropped a non-conference game to the University of New Haven, 13-6 Tuesday afternoon at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana, Fla. The Cougars are now 3-7 overall and 2-4 on their Florida trip, while the Chargers improve to 7-2.

Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, when a grounder by freshman Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) plated fellow freshman Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). After New Haven scored three runs in the bottom of the second, senior Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) singled home junior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) to pull within 3-2. The Chargers pushed another run across in the bottom of the third for a 4-2 advantage before Caldwell tied the score with two runs off an error in the top of the fourth.

The score remained tied until the top of the sixth, when junior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) singled in freshman Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham), then later scored on an error for a 6-4 Caldwell lead. But New Haven responded with four runs in the sixth, three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Chris DeMorais hit at two run homer in the sixth and had three hits on the day for the Chargers.

Ynoa, pictured, went 3-for-4, while Mejia and freshman Stephen Dodd (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) had two hits apiece. The Cougars committed five errors that led to six unearned runs.

Caldwell plays Mercy College in Fort Pierce, Fla., on Wednesday, Mar. 16, beginning at 10:30 p.m.
