LANTANA, Fla. - The Caldwell College baseball team began its Florida trip with a 5-4 win over Pace University and a 6-3 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday at the Santaluces Sports Complex. The results give the Cougars a 2-4 record on the season.
In the first game, Caldwell broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a run-scoring single by freshman Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) that plated junior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) for a 3-2 lead. The Setters came back in the top of the ninth with two runs to take a 4-3 advantage. Down to their final at-bat, the Cougars rallied with a leadoff walk by Doerrer followed by a double from junior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) that scored Doerrer with the game-tying run. After Pace retired the next two batters, sophomore Tom Todaro (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) laced a hard-hit ball to third base that was bobbled, then thrown away, allowing Ynoa to come around and score the game-winning run.
Junior pitcher Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) went the distance, striking out 10 batters without allowing a walk, and giving up eight hits to improve to 1-1. Ynoa had three hits in the win, with freshman Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) recoding two hits.
In the nightcap against St. Thomas Aquinas, the Cougars fell behind 2-0 in the first inning after allowing four walks, four stolen bases and a wild pitch. Caldwell came back in the bottom of the fourth, which started with walks by Doerrer and Ynoa. Senior Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) stepped up and blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence for to put the Cougars on top 3-2. The lead stood until the Spartans pushed four runs across in the top of the eighth, including a two-run double by Andrew Hancsak. Caldwell loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth but were unable to cut into the Spartans' lead.
Junior pitcher A.J. Boardman (Sunnyside, NY/St. Francis Prep) started and did not allow a hit through five innings of work, walking five and striking out four. Mejia finished with two hits.
