CALDWELL, N.J. - Sophomore guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) registered 30 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Caldwell College women's basketball team defeated Concordia College, 90-68 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Tuesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The victory gives the Cougars a 16-5 record on the season, including a 12-3 mark in conference play. The Clippers fall to 5-19, 4-13 CACC with the loss.
Caldwell attempted to put the game away early, as Jones scored 15 points to help the Cougars take a 32-8 lead at the 12:48 mark of the first half. The lead grew to as many as 29 points following back-to-back three-pointers from Jones and senior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) that made the score 54-25 with 5:23 left in the half. Caldwell ended up shooting 51.1 percent from the floor in the first half, including 7-of-13 from three-point range, to take a 59-33 advantage at halftime. Jones had 23 points and hit five threes in the half.
The Cougars built the lead up to as many as 30 points before Concordia battled back, coming within 14 points, 78-64 with 4:32 left in the game. Shelley Monahan scored 16 second-half points to spark the Clippers' comeback attempt. But it was not enough, as Caldwell won for the 13th time in its last 15 games. The Cougars enjoyed a 56-44 rebounding advantage for the game and dished out 24 assists.
Jones went 11-of-17 from the field, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, en route to 30 points. The performance followed a 31-point game against the University of the Sciences on Feb. 12 for Jones, who was named the CACC Player of the Week on Monday. Leedham finished with 16 points, five assists and three steals, and surpassed former Caldwell All-American Nicole Campbell for sixth place on the Cougars' all-time scoring list with 1,460 career points. Sophomore center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) tallied 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, and freshman forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) added 12 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Monahan led the Clippers with 28 points, while Chanessa Blakemore had 10 points and 16 rebounds.
Caldwell hosts Bloomfield College in a match-up between the top two teams in the CACC North Division on Thursday, Feb. 17. The game is set to start at 6:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
