PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to four with a 71-67 victory at Chestnut Hill College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena. The Cougars are now 5-5 overall on the season and 4-1 in league play with the win, while the Lady Griffins fall to 1-7, 1-2 CACC.
Caldwell took control of the game late in the first half with a 12-0 run that made the score 38-18 with 4:06 on the clock. Chestnut Hill closed out the half by outscoring the Cougars 9-1 to cut the deficit to 39-27 at the break. Caldwell shot 51.7 percent from the field in the half while holding the Lady Griffins to 32.4 percent.
The lead extended to 45-31 at the 16:40 mark before Chestnut Hill mounted a comeback with a 21-6 run to pull in front, 52-51 with 7:39 remaining. With the game tied at 62-62, the Cougars forced two turnovers and held the Lady Griffins scoreless while getting baskets from freshman forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) and sophomore forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) in taking a 67-62 lead in the game's final minute. Free throws by Caswell and junior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) down the stretch helped Caldwell hold on for the 71-67 win.
Anderson made 8-of-10 from the field and registered 19 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth consecutive double-double. Felix finished with 14 points, nine boards and three blocks, while junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) added 13 points, five assists and two steals. Caswell tallied a career-high 11 points and three steals. For Chestnut Hill, Ashlen Stayrook had 18 points and Lindsay Alexander scored 17 points in the loss.
Caldwell hosts NYIT on Monday, Dec. 12 in a non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
