CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end with a 68-55 loss to Holy Family University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars, who hadn't lost since Dec. 9, are now 12-4 on the season, including an 8-2 mark in conference play. The Tigers, ranked 21st in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Poll, improve to 12-3, 9-1 CACC. Both teams were included in this week's East Region rankings, with Holy Family ranked second and Caldwell ranked 10th.
The Cougars got off to a slow start offensively and never fully recovered, as Holy Family jumped out to a 22-8 advantage midway through the first half. The lead grew to as many as 19 points, following a pair of free throws by Lauren Peters that made the score 34-15 with 5:11 on the clock. Caldwell surged just before halftime, as sophomore guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) scored 10 points in a 12-5 run that cut the deficit to 39-27 at the break. Holy Family's Catherine Carr scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the first half, as the Tigers made 42.4 percent from the field compared to 34.8 percent for Caldwell. The Cougars also turned the ball over 18 times in the half.
Jones opened the second half with a three-pointer to cut the lead to single digits, 39-30. But a 13-2 run by Holy Family returned momentum to the visitors and pushed the lead up to 52-32 with 15:36 remaining. Caldwell didn't come closer than 15 points until the final three minutes of the game, as the Tigers wrapped up the win. The Cougars ended up shooting 33.3 percent from the floor for the game, and matched their season high for turnovers with 29, coincidentally the same number of miscues committed in Caldwell's previous loss at Bloomfield on Dec. 9.
Jones finished with a team-high 22 points, while senior guard Abena George (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial), pictured, hit three three-pointers and had 11 points, four assists and five steals. Freshman forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points. Carr ended up going 13-of-19 from the field en route to a game-high 29 points for Holy Family.
Caldwell continues CACC play with a home game against Felician College on Thursday, Feb. 3. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
