PARSIPPANY, N.J. - Senior outfielder Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) became the first Caldwell College baseball player to tally 200 career hits with a double in the first game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Post University Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field. Keelan, the Cougars' all-time leader in hits, had three hits on the day to give him 202 in his career. The Cougars (9-13 overall, 5-3 CACC) dropped the first game 2-1 before winning the nightcap 3-0.
In the first game, Post scored a run in the bottom of the third on an error, a walk, a groundout and a balk for a 1-0 lead. Keelan, right, led off the top of the fourth with a double to achieve the 200-hit milestone. Unfortunately for Caldwell, the Cougars stranded Keelan at second and still trailed 1-0. The Eagles (13-13, 5-5 CACC) added another run in the eighth inning when Travis Locascio singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Doug Wells to lead 2-0. In the top of the ninth, seniors Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) and Juan Pinero (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Keelan followed with a single up the middle, but Robertson was
thrown out at home by Post centerfielder Jose Reyes. The Cougars finally got on the scoreboard on a single by senior Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) that plated Pinero. But with runners on first and second, Eagles' pitcher Tim McCarthy induced a game-ending double play.
McCarthy held Caldwell to one run on seven hits while striking out six in nine innings for the victory. Caldwell senior pitcher Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) had a strong outing, allowing an unearned run on two hits in 7 1/3 innings while fanning seven. Casal, left, also achieved a career milestone, becoming Caldwell's all-time leader in innings pitched with 232 1/3. Stephen Pfeil held the record before today's game with 225 innings pitched from 2006-2009.
The second game belonged to senior pitcher Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella). Riggs scattered three hits, the last in the sixth inning, then retired the final 10 batters for his first career shutout. The reigning CACC Pitcher of the Week, he struck out nine batters without a walk to improve to 3-1. On the season, Riggs has 50 strikeouts and 10 walks in 47 1/3 innings. The offense was provided by Pinero's run-scoring single in the fifth and a two-run single by Robertson in the ninth. Robertson and junior Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) each had two hits, while Keelan singled in the third.
Earlier this season, Keelan surpassed former Caldwell standout Hasani Whitfield as the program's hit leader with his 187th hit. He also ranks among the program's all-time leaders in home runs, RBI, runs and career batting average.
The Cougars are scheduled to play a non-conference game at Nyack College on Friday, Apr. 9, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
