LYNDHURST, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team earned a season sweep of Felician College with a 4-2 win Friday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. The Cougars (15-15), who defeated Felician 5-4 on Thursday, remain in second place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with an 11-4 record in league play. The Golden Falcons are now 22-20 overall, 10-6 CACC.
Mickey Zudonyi helped get Felician off to a quick start, drawing a leadoff walk, stealing second and advancing to third on a fly ball. A grounder by Marcos Torres was enough to plate Zudonyi for a 1-0 Golden Falcons lead. In the top of the third, the Cougars answered with a triple by sophomore Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) that drove home senior Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella). Doerrer came home on an error on the play for a 2-1 Caldwell lead.
Robertson made it 3-1 with a single that scored senior Miguel Perdomo (Teaneck, NJ/Bergen Catholic) in the fifth. Then in the sixth, freshman Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) hit a two-out double that brought home senior Juan Pinero (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) to put Caldwell up 4-1. Felician got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, when Torres tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly from Alex Del Valle. But Caldwell senior Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) held the Golden Falcons to one hit and three walks over the final three innings to wrap up the victory.
Casal went the distance, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking four to improve to 3-4 on the season. Doerrer and sophomore Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) led the Cougar bats with two hits each. For Felician, starter Jeff Calabrese gave up six hits and four runs, three earned, while walking three and fanning eight in 5 2/3 innings to absorb the loss.
Caldwell hosts Dominican College in a pivotal CACC doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 24, beginning at 12:00 p.m. The games will be played at Caldwell High School.
