COUGARS DEFEAT CACC NEWCOMER CONCORDIA 13-11 IN BASEBALL

PARSIPPANY, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team scored 13 runs for the second straight game and held on to beat Concordia College, 13-11 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Sunday afternoon at Smith Field. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the bottom of the sixth inning due to darkness with the Clippers leading 2-1. The contest will be completed at a later date. The Cougars are now 11-15 overall and 7-4 in league play, while the Clippers, who are in their first year competing in the CACC, fall to 20-14, 7-6 CACC.

Senior Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) got the Cougars off to a good start with a home run in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Juan Pinera (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) followed with a double and later scored on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead. Caldwell made it 3-0 on a run-scoring single by senior Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) in the second. The Clippers answered in the top of the third with four runs, including a three-run homer by Greg Conway that put the Clippers ahead 4-3.

Over the next four innings, the Cougars would score 10 runs to take control of the game and lead 13-6. Freshman Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) hit his first career home run in the fourth and had a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Keelan and sophomore Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) each had RBI singles in the fourth, while senior Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) hit a two-run double in the sixth. But Concordia did not give up, scoring three times in the eighth and plating two more runs in the ninth to make the score 13-11. With runners on first and third and two out, junior Juan Mejia (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) induced a groundout to end the game.

Keelan finished with three hits and scored three runs, while Robertson (pictured) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Caldwell finished with 14 hits and scored 13 runs, matching Saturday's output in a 13-7 victory at the University of the Sciences.

Senior Thomas Forkin (Oceanside, NY/Holy Trinity) started the game and allowed six runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out seven and walking four in six innings. Concordia starter Keith Malanga lasted 3 1/3 innings and took the loss.

Next up for Caldwell is a CACC doubleheader with Bloomfield College on Tuesday, Apr. 13. The first game starts at 11:00 a.m. at Smith Field.
