BASEBALL SPLITS AT CHESTNUT HILL

NORTH WALES, Pa. - The Caldwell College baseball team beat Chestnut Hill College 3-1 before losing in Game 2, 8-3 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hostelley Field. The results give the Cougars a 6-11 record on the season, including a 2-2 mark in league play, while the Griffins are now 7-7, 5-1 CACC.

Caldwell took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, when senior Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) doubled home senior Juan Pinero (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus), then later scored from third on a grounder by sophomore Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan). Chestnut Hill answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Cougars' lead to 2-1. Caldwell scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Doerrer led off the inning with a walk, then stole second and advanced to third on a fly out. Sophomore Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) plated Doerrer with a grounder for a 3-1 lead.

Senior Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) pitched another gem, allowing a run on five hits while striking out a season-high 13 batters against three walks in nine innings. Keelan had two doubles to lead the Cougars offensively. Chris Lauber also pitched well for Chestnut Hill, allowing two unearned runs on six hits in eight innings.

In Game 2, the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the fourth to grab an early lead. Caldwell loaded the bases with two outs on two walks and a fielder's choice. Cook walked, freshman Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) was hit by a pitch and  senior Miguel Perdomo (Teaneck, NJ/Bergen Catholic) came home on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead. But the Griffins scored eight unanswered runs, including two apiece in the fourth and fifth innings and four runs in the seventh, to run away with the second game. Senior Thomas Forkin (Oceanside, NY/Holy Trinity) started and gave up four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings to absorb the loss. Bobby Hopkins earned the win after pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Griffins.

Caldwell plays a non-conference game at Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday, Mar. 30, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
