LANTANA, Fla. – Senior pitcher Thomas Forkin (Oceanside, NY/Holy Trinity) held St. Michael's College to one hit and an unearned run over eight innings to lead the Caldwell College baseball team to a 4-1 win Sunday afternoon at the Santaluces Sportplex. With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Purple Knights begin the year 0-1.
Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, loading the bases on a hit batsmen and two walks. On the next at-bat, freshman Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) was hit by a pitch, bringing home sophomore Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside). St. Michael's tied the game in the bottom of the second on a single by Patrick Lawler. The Cougars broke the tie in the top of the fourth, when senior Miguel Perdomo (Teaneck, NJ/Bergen Catholic) doubled, then came home on a single by sophomore Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan). Ynoa singled home Doerrer in the seventh, and scored an unearned run in the ninth for a 4-1 lead. Sophomore pitcher Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) recorded the final two outs with strikeouts to earn the save and give Caldwell its first win in three games in Florida.
Forkin matched his career high with 10 strikeouts against two walks in eight innings and did not allow a runner past second base after the second inning. Doerrer and Ynoa each had a pair of hits for Caldwell, while Lawler recorded two hits for the Purple Knights. SMC's Austin Ziskie fanned nine batters while giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits in seven innings.
The Cougars play a single game at 17th-ranked Florida Tech on Monday, Mar. 15, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Melbourne, Fla.
