CALDWELL, N.J. - Freshman forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) scored a career-high 22 points as the Caldwell College women's basketball team cruised to an 83-53 victory over East Stroudsburg University in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. With the win, the Cougars improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 1-6.
Caldwell led early and broke open the game with a 15-0 run that put the Cougars on top 28-8. Anderson scored six points and senior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) had five in the run, which saw the Warriors turn the ball over six times. The lead grew to as many as 27 points after a pair of baskets by sophomore center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and two free throws from junior guard Willeen Capehart (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) made the score 40-13 with 3:17 on the clock. East Stroudsburg was able to cut the deficit to 22 points, as the Cougars took a 42-20 lead into halftime. Anderson, pictured, led all players with 12 points in the first half, as Caldwell forced 20 ESU turnovers in the game's first 20 minutes.
The second half was more of the same, as the Warriors failed to get any closer. Leedham hit three three-pointers in the second half, with the third one giving the Cougars their largest lead of the game, 74-35 with 9:29 remaining. Caldwell scorched the net with 65.4 percent field goal shooting after halftime, as Leedham made all five of her shots and Anderson went 4-of-5 from the floor. The Cougars ended up shooting 56.5 percent from the field for the game, compared to 31.7 percent for East Stroudsburg.
Anderson recorded her best offensive game of her career by making 9-of-12 from the field and all four of her free throws, surpassing the 17-point performances against Nyack and Bloomfield earlier this season. Leedham finished with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Felix added 11 points and eight rebounds. Caldwell dished out 25 assists as a team, led by five helpers apiece from sophomore guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) and senior guard Abena George (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial). George also swiped four steals. Mia Waring led East Stroudsburg with 14 points, six rebounds and seven steals.
Caldwell returns to action on Dec. 30, when they play a non-conference game at UMass-Lowell. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Lowell, Mass.
