NYACK, N.Y. - Junior guard
Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) tallied her 1,000th point in the second half of a 61-40 loss to Nyack College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest Thursday evening at Bowman Gymnasium. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in league play. The Warriors complete the season sweep of Caldwell and improve to 10-8 overall, 6-3 CACC.
Leedham became the 12th Cougar to reach the 1,000-point milestone with a free throw midway through the second half. It was her 13th point of the half and 20th of the game, marking the fifth time this season and the fourth time in her last five games that Leedham has scored at least 20 points. She is the third Caldwell women's basketball player in the past three years to achieve 1,000 points, joining current assistant coaches
Dana Leary (2008) and
Mackenzie Lynch (2009).
Nyack took control of the game midway through in the first half, when three-pointers from Lekesha Harris and Kelsey McIntosh put the Warriors ahead 17-6 with 9:27 left in the half. The Cougars were only able to cut the lead to nine before Nyack took a 30-17 advantage into halftime. Poor shooting hampered Caldwell, as the Cougars made just 7-of-32 (21.9 percent) from the field in the first period compared to 50.0 percent (11-of-22) for the host Warriors.
Caldwell pulled to within eight points following a basket and two free throws from Leedham and a basket by freshman center
Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) that made the score 32-24 with 14:40 remaining. But the Warriors never let the visitors get any closer, leading by as many as 21 points to hand the Cougars their first double-digit loss of the season. Caldwell ended up shooting a season-low 25.4 percent from the field for the game.
Leedham, who was 7-of-20 from the floor en route to 20 points, was the only Cougar to score in double figures. She also had three steals and a block. Felix finished with a game-high 12 rebounds, while freshman guard
Torey Jones (N. Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) swiped four steals. McIntosh matched Leedham with 20 points while making 5-of-6 from three-point range for Nyack. Vicky Sweet registered 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Shelly Yount added 11 points and six blocks in the win.
Next up for Caldwell is another CACC game at Holy Family on Saturday, Jan. 30. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
