CALDWELL BASEBALL SWEEPS GRIFFINS TO END SEASON

NORTH WALES, Penn. - The Caldwell College baseball team completed its 2009 schedule with two wins over Chestnut Hill College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hostelley Field. The victories give the Cougars an 18-23 overall record, including a 12-15 mark in league play. The Griffins end their season at 18-25, 13-14 CACC.

Caldwell wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in Game 1, scoring seven runs over the first two innings. Junior Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) hit a two-run double and senior Aaron Hoffstatter (Glasco, NY/Saugerties) plated two runs with a single in the top of the first. Senior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) tripled home a run and later scored on a grounder by Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) in the top of the second for a 7-0 lead. Hoffstatter, who was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, also blasted a solo home run in the seventh, while Torres, who was 3-for-5, scored his third run of the game after hitting another triple in the top of the eighth.

Junior right-hander Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) kept the Griffins' hitters in check, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out eight in six innings of work. Junior Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) tossed three scoreless innings of relief while fanning six.

In the second game, Chestnut Hill took an early lead on a two-run homer by Mike Knipe in the bottom of the first. The Cougars answered with five runs in the second and two more in the third to take a commanding 7-2 advantage. Keelan hit a two-run single in the second, while Torres and juniors Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Josh Stedham (North Palm Springs, FL/Jensen Beach) each had RBIs in the inning. In the third, Hoffstatter doubled home junior Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City) and Robertson drove home junior Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) with a sacrifice fly. The Griffins scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but a solo home run from Hilgenberg and a run-scoring grounder by Velazquez put Caldwell on top 9-4. Hilgenberg went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Torres, Keelan and Velazquez had two hits apiece.

Senior right-hander Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood), pictured, went the distance in the final outing of his career, allowing four runs, one earned, on eight hits in seven innings. The victory is the 18th of his career. Hines, Hoffstatter and Torres, who played in their final games for the Cougars, played major roles in Caldwell's two appearances in the NCAA Division II Region Tournament and the 2008 CACC Tournament title.
