PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College baseball team suffered its fourth consecutive loss, falling to Pace University, 7-2 in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Finnerty Field. The Cougars drop to 16-22 on the season, while the Setters, who defeated Caldwell in the season opener, improve to 19-26-1.
Pace scored three runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth to take control of the game. Vinny Dammann hit a two-run double in the third to spark the Setters' offense. In the top of the sixth, the Cougars used a two-out rally that resulted in a run-scoring single by senior Aaron Hoffstatter (Glasco, NY/Saugerties), pictured, to bring home junior Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City). Then in the seventh, junior Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) scored on a grounder by junior Juan Pinero (Bronx, NY/Columbus) that made the score 5-2. But Caldwell would get no closer, as the Setters scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings for a 7-2 advantage.
Pace pitcher Michael Tamburino held the Cougars to one run on four hits in six innings to earn the win. Freshman Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) started for Caldwell and gave up four runs on six hits while fanning four in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Caldwell wraps up the regular season with a three-game series with Chestnut Hill College. The Cougars will host the Griffins on Friday, May 1, for a single game at Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 2 in Philadelphia, Penn.
