CALDWELL BASEBALL TOPS USP, 18-7

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The Caldwell College baseball team beat the University of the Sciences, 18-7 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Friday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field. The 18 runs and 18 hits were both season highs for the Cougars, who improve to 12-18 overall and 6-11 in the conference with the win. The Devils drop to 3-32, 2-16 CACC.

Caldwell juniors Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella), Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) and Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) each had RBIs in the first three innings to help the Cougars take a 4-0 lead. But a five-run third inning, sparked by a two-run double from Brian Scott, allowed the Devils to take a 5-4 advantage. Caldwell regained the lead in the top of the fourth on run-scoring hits from Robertson and Keelan, but USP answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 6-6.

The Cougars broke the game open in the top of the fifth with seven runs on five hits. Junior Juan Pinero (Bronx, NY/Columbus) hit an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly in two at-bats in the inning, while Keelan had a two-run double. In the top of the sixth, four USP errors and a two-run double from junior Aaron Hoffstatter (Glasco, NY/Saugerties) helped Caldwell score five more runs for an 18-6 lead.

Keelan went 3-for-5 with a run and four RBI, while Robertson recorded two doubles, four runs and two RBI and walked three times. Irwin and senior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) also had three hits in the win. The Cougars used seven pitchers, with freshman Kevin Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) earning his first collegiate victory after working a scoreless 1 2/3 innings.

Caldwell and the Devils meet again on Saturday, Apr. 25 for a doubleheader at Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J. The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
