NYACK SWEEPS CALDWELL IN BASEBALL


NYACK, N.Y. - The Caldwell College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Nyack College, 10-5 and 10-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Nyack. The losses leave the Cougars at 10-17 overall and 4-10 in league play, while the Warriors improve to 13-10, 9-7 CACC.

Caldwell struck first in Game 1, scoring in the top of the second on a single by junior Andrew Robertson (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella). In the third, junior Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) singled home senior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella), then came home on a single by junior Juan Pinero (Bronx, NY/Columbus) for a 3-0 lead. The Warriors scored a run in the bottom of the third, then took over the lead with three runs in the fourth, including a two-run homer by Jonathan Mott. A two-run double in the top of the fifth by junior Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY/Long Island City) put the Cougars on top, 5-4. But a five-run inning in the bottom of the fifth gave Nyack a 9-5 advantage. Cody Levins belted a two-run home run for the Warriors, who added a run in the sixth for a 10-5 lead.

Kevin Earlie pitched the final six innings to earn the win for Nyack, while junior Thomas Forkin (Oceanside, NY/Holy Trinity) absorbed the loss after allowing nine runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The second game was all Nyack, as the Warriors had 11 hits and scored 10 runs in the first six innings. Caldwell broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Torres, pictured, and freshman Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan). Phil Messerian held the Cougars to four hits and one run while fanning eight batters and walking two in a complete-game victory. He also went 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI at the plate. Senior Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) last two innings and took the loss.

Caldwell returns to action on Sunday, Apr. 19 with a CACC game at Philadelphia University. The single game starts at 12:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Penn.
