COUGARS HOLD OFF CONCORDIA IN BASEBALL, 5-4

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College baseball team beat Concordia College, 5-4 in a non-conference game in Bronxville, N.Y., Sunday afternoon. Junior pitcher Buddy Riggs (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) struck out 12 batters in the win, which gives the Cougars a 4-5 record on the year. The Clippers fall to 10-11-1 with the loss.

Caldwell broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the top of the third inning. Senior Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) singled home junior Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central), then junior Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) blasted a three-run home run, his first of the year, for a 4-0 lead. Riggs cruised through the first four innings, striking out nine of the first 10 batters he faced. In the fifth, a double by Donnie Roth scored Vincent Ferraro for the Clippers' first run of the game. Torres drove in another run for Caldwell on a sacrifice fly that plated junior Miguel Perdomo (Teaneck, NJ/Bergen Catholic) in the top of the seventh for a 5-1 lead. The run proved to be important, as Concordia put three runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh, including a two-run homer by Joe Vaskas, to make the score 5-4. But junior right-hander Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep) retired the final seven batters in order to preserve the win.

Riggs allowed three hits and one run while fanning 12 and walking one in five innings of work to improve to 1-1 on the season. Casal pitched four innings of relief and earned his first save of the year. Jose Aquino struck out nine in six innings for the Clippers and took the loss.

Caldwell begins its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Wednesday, Mar. 25 with a doubleheader against Post University. The first game is set to start at 3:00 p.m. at Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J.
