COUGARS DROP NON-LEAGUE GAME AT ADELPHI

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team fell to Adelphi University, 82-77 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Adelphi's Center for Recreation & Sports. The result is the third loss in a row for the Cougars, who are now 3-4 on the season. The Panthers end a three-game losing streak to Caldwell and improve to 2-7.

Adelphi broke open a close game with an 8-0 run late in the first half that put the Panthers on top, 36-25 with just under four minutes left in the half. The Panthers maintained the upper hand the rest of the first period and took a 48-36 advantage into halftime. Ashley Caiafa tallied 15 points in the half for Adelphi, which made 50.0 percent from the field.

The lead grew to 16 early in the second half before Caldwell used a 12-1 run to pull to within five, 55-50 with 13:49 remaining. Junior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) had six points and freshman guard Torey Jones (N. Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) scored five points in the run for Caldwell. But the Cougars never came any closer the rest of the way, as the Panthers built their lead back up to 10 points with less than a minute to go. Caldwell shot 49.2 percent from the field for the game and held a 40-36 rebounding advantage but turned the ball over 21 times compared to 15 for Adelphi.

Freshman center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), pictured, tallied the final four points of the game and finished with a career-high 19 points to go with 14 rebounds in the loss. Jones tallied 20 points and four assists, Leedham had 18 points and junior guard Abena George (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) recorded six assists and five steals. Caiafa matched Jones with 20 points for Adelphi, which received 18 points and 15 rebounds from Theresa Foley.

The Cougars host Le Moyne and East Stroudsburg at the ECAC Holiday Classic Dec. 19-20 in the George R. Newman Center.
