CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team was victorious in its home-opener, a 63-56 win over Cheyney University in a non-conference game Monday evening in the George R. Newman Center. Four players, led by 19 points from junior guard
Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.), accounted for all of the scoring for the Cougars, who improve to 3-1 on the season. The Lady Wolves drop to 1-2 with the loss.
Caldwell got off to a fast start, taking a 15-4 lead during the first five minutes of the contest. The Lady Wolves came all the way back and eventually took a 29-24 lead with just under four minutes left in the half. Four points by freshman center
Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and a three from freshman guard
Torey Jones (N. Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) sparked a 9-2 Caldwell run to close out the half that resulted in a 33-31 advantage at the break. Felix had 13 points in the first period to lead all scorers.
Caldwell led by as many as seven points early in the second half, but Cheyney did not go away, closing to within three, 53-50 with just over five minutes to play. Three-pointers by Jones and Leedham keyed a 10-2 spree that put Caldwell ahead 63-52 and provided enough breathing room to cruise to victory. The Cougars held a 40-27 rebounding advantage while making six three-pointers to just one for Cheyney.
Leedham drained four threes and grabbed five boards in the win. Felix recorded her third double-double in just her fourth collegiate game with a career-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. She also tallied five steals and two blocks, also career bests. Lambert finished with 15 points and seven boards, while Jones had 14 points, four rebounds and seven assists. Also, junior guard
Abena George (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) dished out seven assists and had two steals. Angel Henderson led the Lady Wolves with 18 points and three steals.
Caldwell begins the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Wednesday, Dec. 2 with a game at Dominican College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
