PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Freshman defender Carlos Sanchez (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) scored in the 108th minute to lift the Caldwell College men's soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Holy Family University Saturday afternoon. The game marked the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game for the Cougars, who evened their overall record at 3-3. The Tigers drop to 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
With less than three minutes to play in the second overtime period, Sanchez blasted a shot from about 20 yards out that was deflected by a Holy Family defender. The ball carried into the upper corner of the goal, ending the game in Caldwell's favor. It was Sanchez's first goal of his career.
All five goals were scored after halftime, including a goal by junior midfielder Justin Everett (Stewartstown, PA/Kennard Dale), pictured, in the 56th minute that put the Cougars ahead 1-0. In the 64th minute, Tim Weglicki tied the game off an assist from Matt Kocher. Caldwell regained the lead a little over three minutes later, when senior midfielder Kevoi Walters (Clarendon, Jamaica/Clarendon) finished a pass from senior defender Kagiso Rhenoster (Mafikeng, South Africa/Mmbatho) in the 68th minute. Weglicki tied the game in the 80th minute with his second goal of the game for Holy Family, eventually forcing overtime.
Senior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) tallied four saves for Caldwell, as did Holy Family goalkeeper Patrick Becker in a losing effort.
The Cougars continue CACC play with a home game against Chestnut Hill College on Thursday, Sept. 18. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
